Gunbuster 2 Episode 4
Jan. 7th, 2006 01:27 pmOMG, all I can say is WTF WTF WTF WTF? Granted, I was laughing half the time I was saying this, so I suppose it's a good thing. That's just... OMG, this was the parody that the original Gunbuster was probably trying to be before it turned serious (albeit in a good way). Unfortunately, with the OAV format, I could barely remember character names (if they hadn't finally mentioned Lark's name, I would have watched the whole episode without recalling it--and then I was like, "OH! LARK!-->Skylark! It all makes sense now."). Actually, there were many pilot names being thrown around that I had no face to attach to. In Episode 3 they just kind of introduced all the Topless names and faces and I never got beyond Lark and, er, her rival. ... Yeah, that's pretty much how it was. Also unfortunately with the OAV format, it seems like Gainax has created whole new world here and laid down some questions that they probably won't answer--most of the episode I was going "?????" (what is up with the twins? with Nikola? what the hell is Nono? who created her? who taught her to give such cheesy speeches? will we ever see the original Buster Machine?--I can't remember how many years it was before Noriko and Kazumi returned--I wonder if it was after all these events? dammit, I want to know) but I was also going "OMG" as I considered a) the sheer number of things being destroyed and b) the sheer amount of power doing the destroying. (Shooting through a planet, wtf?!)
Have I mentioned how uncomfortable it would be to straddle a bar while piloting a mech? I have no idea why Gainax designed it like that. Some kind of innuendo? It always makes me wince. I wonder how many are left after this...
BUT Nono is a trip. And Lark does care about her. (And MariMite has really destroyed any chances of me hearing someone address a sempai, etc. as "Onee-sama" without wondering if a crossover would be possible.) Lark's rival what's-her-face (oh, apparently's it's "Chiko") also is surprisingly watchful of Nono (probably because of Episode 3, which I can barely remember...). *sigh* Ah, well, Gunbuster 2 is good entertainment, with its strange mix of randomness, story, and production value that Gainax seems to put into its OAV. And I like Lark and I like Nono and I like the fanart I occassionally stumble upon. So it's all good.
Have I mentioned how completely ODD it is to hear my name in an ANIME? Very disconcerting.
One last point and nitpick: How the hell does Nono talk in space?!?! There shouldn't be any sound in space much less molecules you can vibrate! (They correctly have the characters wearing space suits but no regard for talking in space. *sigh*)
EXOTIC MANEUVER!
