For my own reference so I don't forget if/when I finally sit down to do a book post.

Read:
The Islands of the Blessed by Nancy Farmer (Did I talk about Land of the Silver Apples?)
Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
The Queen's Soprano by Carol Dines

Read in progress/to be read:
The Dirt Eaters by Dennis Foon
Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Borrowed, started, but unfinished:
Un-Lun-Dun by China MiƩville
Syren by Angie Sage (part of the Septimus Heap series)

So . . . sometimes my seemingly random picks at the library end up someone coming together thematically more or less and I got lots of religious, philosophical, spiritual reading in the recent batches. Is someone (something?) trying to tell me something?

And, sometimes, I have to revisit songs I'd used to loop and remember why I'd looped them in the first place. Ever since the SNSD fandom has gotten me into more discussions about music--especially pop music--I've been trying to figure out why I like so many "crappy" songs. I do enjoy listening to hip hop on the radio. A lot of my enjoyment, I'm coming to understand, has to do with a combination of lyrics and melody. But, you say, the lyrics are crappy! In most cases, yes, that's absolutely true: they're throwaway, strung together to rhyme--and titillate. There's a combination of the words and the melody that just project this sensuous feeling over me, whether it's because it's putting fun images in my head, or it's the tone and quality of a singer's voice, or the ways words trip along with the beat. I can't deny that I love me some dirty lyrics because they're always putting a big grin on my face in exactly the way a bad/lame pun will. I blame my upbringing and growing up with songs like "Boom Boom Boom" (to balance out all the Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, RHCP, Radiohead, etc.).

OMG, my sis and I just spazzed over Jock Jams. <3
