fangirly over Germans~
Jun. 8th, 2011 09:32 amBut these are a few of my favorite things about Hand aufs Herz's Jenny/Emma storyline:
- (This goes before the cut because I want to share it.) Hand aufs Herz's cover of Beyonce's "Sweet Dreams," featuring Emma (the faux blonde) as the main, Luzi (brunette) as main back up, and Sophie (short-haired redhead) as third-part harmony. I've really liked this song for quite some time, but this version is heartbreaking, especially as it's accompanied by just piano (I do not like the OST version as much in terms of emotion because it features much of the synths and beats of Beyonce's original version). Emma is singing her little heart out because critical shit just went down between her and Jenny and it's exactly the emotion of the moment, as close as Emma can get to getting the pain-but-longing out of her. I swear Luzi's giving Emma a look like, "Girl, you okay?" (No, Luzi's not looking at Timo, not listening to you, la la la la la la~)
( Fangirly spoiling! )
Guyz, I want to share all this awesomeness with you! It's been a long time since a live action show penned a lesbian storyline that I really loved and didn't feel to me over done. It's told with surprising balance. Sure, there are ridiculous drama elements (Me: "Jenny, you did what? Oh, you bitch!"), but everything builds so well that by the time there's shouting and tears, it feels like it makes sense for there to be shouting and tears (and whispering and weariness). (It's balanced in another way, as well, in that Jenny and Emma are engaged in a game of give-and-take so that it feels like both have invested in these twisted up affairs rather than anything being too one-sided.) Of course, you just want to shove them together but the journey is good. I hit a moment when I was watching where I thought, "This is better than fanfic." My mind didn't wander off creating storylines for these characters I like because it was so into watching where this story being told to me was going.
That's good stuff.
But now I get what Nemi meant when she said to me that she wasn't sure she wanted to watch past this point because--well, where do you go from here now that the drama and tension of getting these two together is gone? Crazy, ridiculous storyline land, is where, since TV has a hard time selling a sweet, working couple. D: Do I want to watch?! D: Don't turn my sweet dream into a beautiful nightmare, Germany!
