Already December: a November Digest
Dec. 1st, 2012 09:34 pmI did not know before, but I do know now, that the Fall-Winter season is the best time of the year to visit the tide pools here in San Diego. I only discovered this little fact a few weeks ago. For, as it happens, in the Winter the negative low tides happen during daylight hours; in the Summer, those low tides often happen at night. Where can you see them? One place is Cabrillo National Monument. There's a lighthouse there. I've visited the lighthouse. For some reason, during that visit I completely failed to notice the "Tide Pools" sign that directs you to the turn off where you drive down to park near the water. This turn off is directly beyond the little booth at which you pay for parking ($5, good for five consecutive days). Yeah. Me. Oblivious.
The National Monument itself is a beautiful San Diego location to visit: I find the drive there peaceful, even somewhat eerie in a removed way as you wend up a lone road. The park affords a view of downtown San Diego to the south. To the west stretches the ocean, where it seems you can catch sight of the whales migrating through (I think it's a bit later in the year that they get closer to the shore, but at this time of year you can go on a whale-watching boat tour). During low tide, the rocks are slippery: wear footwear with good traction and possibly bring a towel, a change of socks, shoes, and a back up set of clothing (just in case you might tumble into the water). As the website says, optimal viewing hours are two hours before and two hours after low tide. They kick you out at 5:30pm, but the sun is pretty much set by that time anyway. Did I mention it's beautiful? (Though my photography skills mean that it's an out-of-focus beauty. XD)
Hand-cranked customizable music boxes? Or a Theremin mini kit? Or thumb pianos? Which is the coolest random musical gift? You decide!
Alison Bechdel among the Out100! I'm only pointing this out because I saw this pic while flipping through the physical magazine. It went like this: "Huh. 'Dykes to Watch Out For.' Why is there a man--?" My eyes skipped to the adjoining page. "Oh my God, that's Alison Bechdel! She cleans up so well!" I can't decide if this photo makes me go "Aw, she's so cute" or "Suit~~~." I still have yet to read Are You My Mother? I must rectify this soon.
( Books I read: 'A Wrinkle in Time' by Madeleine L'engle, 'The Phantom Tollbooth' by Norton Juster, 'Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal' by Jeanette Winterson; Music: listen to Alela Diane and Mariee Sioux )
I saw Skyfall. It wasn't a typical Bond movie. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I think I was honestly confused by the lack of a Bond girl. I kept expecting to see one and enjoy all the sexualization and objectification, but . . . there was none to be had. There was homoerotic undertones in the villain towards Bond. But nothing for the lesbians. :(
Am I the last to know that YouTube is showing full length movies? What in the who now?
