I... want the power and money that the women on Cashmere Mafia throw around. There are some really cringe worthy and sometimes mixed messages this show is throwing around concerning women who pursue and make it in power careers (for a snarky, but also insightful recap of the episode, check out badmachine's recap over at afterellen.com)... but the ending scene of the second episode made me just go, "Yes, I wish I could say 'up yours' (or 'back off, bitch') to someone in a manner like that." Awesome.

Despite the moments that make me grimace and the amusing amount of time these power women seem to spend not working (the pilot was really guilty of this, but the second episode actually shows them doing their jobs... though where they seem to get all this time to go out to lunch with each other, I'll never know), power women = sexy.

Cringe worthy in episode 2: working moms vs. stay-at-home moms. This is a battle that can only be lose-lose for all women. I wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't read an article on this topic about how we lose sight of the argument if women are the ones arguing with women over which better rather than looking at larger issues concerning work environments, options, etc., but this really did make me go, "I know this is an issue that can be legitimately addressed... I just wish you weren't addressing it as a 'war' that has to be 'won' by one side or the other." But still... Zoe laid the smackdown and she was awesome for it, but also... Ugh. Torn, I am.

2) What is with the marriage issues here? Zoe is pretty much represents the storyline about a couple in which the husband has really stepped aside for his wife and they're about making it work so far. But... Julia, is it? WTF? I mean, her lay down at the end of episode 1 was kind of cheer-worthy... except for what she was actually saying. What she decides to do next, though... whether to carry out her threat or not... I don't know how I feel about that. And I don't know how I feel about her friends supporting her in carrying it out.

3) Do nannies really get paid that much in NY? And if so, dammit, why don't I like kids?

4) Can you imagine how bratty kids will be in fifty years? Man, these children need a few hours kneeling in a corner thinking about their demands. It almost makes you not want to be ridiculously rich so you don't have kids like these.

As an aside, has Lucy Liu ever played anything other than a raging biatch? Is it possible for her to play anything but the Dragon Lady?

There are a lot of interesting issues this show can explore... but I'm wondering if a lot of it will get lost in the Sex in the City glamor. There's inevitably gender commentary up the wazoo, yet balancing it with the need for drama does not necessarily mean it's going to be all sunshine and roses. For now, I'm going to keep my eye on this show, having been entertained for the first two episodes. Caitlin and her story help a lot.
