Wait . . .
Apr. 7th, 2010 11:09 amOMG, there is a sympathetic(?) Vietnamese lesbian-themed movie: Chơi vơi, aka Adrift (trailer)?!
Apparently it's been hitting up the festival circuit?! I didn't even know that there was gay and lesbian representation in Vietnamese media to begin with, whether stereotyped, positive or negative! What is going on?! *head asplode* (I do really enjoy director Ngo Cuong's openness about acknowledging he had prejudice and fear against gays in a society that fosters those feelings, only to discover they were unfounded--and now he's all up on making gay films, I see.)
I saw an article on OMNTD not too long ago about increased exposure of gay characters in Korean media--gay, rather than lesbian. I thought it was interesting that there seemed a dearth of conversation about homosexual women. (This seems to be the case more often in general, whatever media you choose to look at; feel free to speculate why.) I think so far the only positive representation of "lesbianism" I've seen in Korean media has been . . . Sohee's role in Hellcats/I Like It Hot. ROFL. (The film would never have called it lesbianism, more like taking a girl crush a little farther, and for some reason it doesn't seem to be commented on much despite the fact that Sohee did kiss a girl in that movie. . . . More than once.) Scarlet Letter is a train wreck in many senses, though how can it not be with a title like that? (It's also sad to watch since its lead actress committed suicide shortly after finishing that film.) I hear the other big Korean movie repping lesbians is a horror movie (Whispering Corridors?) . . . lawlz. Lesbians. Always scary. XD That's what Lucy Diamond would have you believe anyway. (Oh, D.E.B.S.! <3)
