The Hollywood Reporter: How are you on set when you have to play a specific clone? How do you prepare to play each one?
Maslany: The turnover between characters is quick, like an hour and a half. As soon as I'm taking off Sarah's clothes and putting on Cosima's, I'm listening to Cosima's music, I'm changing dialect and speaking, moving, thinking like her and shifting my physicality. I have an amazing dialect coach who sits with me while I'm getting hair and makeup done and bounces it off me and makes sure I'm in the right place. When I walk on set as Cosima, there's a dance that happens, which the crew has now taken to doing when they see her coming, and they dance with me. They're up for the process.
- Emmy's Dark Horse: 'Orphan Black's' Tatiana Maslany
"When Tatiana does her 'Cosima dance' to get into character, it’s a beautiful and familiar thing." - Graeme Manson, "Black-Listed: Cosima's Playlist"
This is so cute I can't even. That everyone is involved with Tatiana's method acting is awesome. Honestly, seeing as how there's no gag reel on the S1 DVD set (note to self: order the DVD set already), the least they could have done was include footage of Tatiana doing each character's dance. It's been mentioned and talked about so much now that everyone is just "I WANT TO SEE IT."
(Actually, that Black-Listed playlist blurb answers at least one question I've been wondering: Cosima's not adopted, if her liberal academic parents are her "birth parents.")
Among other things everyone is talking about: I've read enough articles floating Tatiana Maslany's name for an Emmy nomination, at least, that if she doesn't get a nomination I will actually be disappointed. If nothing else, she needs to be nominated for the "WTF?" factor of no one knowing her. Seriously: Kerri Washington ("Scandal"), Elisabeth Moss ("Mad Men"), and Emmy Rossum ("Shameless") have NO IDEA who Tatiana Maslany is or what "Orphan Black" is about. It's hilarious in its own way. No one knows how to talk with her because no one knows her work. XD
So "Orphan Black" will be at San Diego Comic Con this month.
I won't be going--because SDCC has gotten so big that you need to decide like a year ahead that you're going to go just so you can purchase a badge--but I'm psyched because the SDCC attendees are pretty awesome about taking video of the panels and creator-writers Graeme Manson and John Fawcett will be there along with Tatiana Maslany (EVERYONE), Jordan Gavaris (Felix), and Bruce Dylan (Paul).
I won't be there but . . . I know my reaction to seeing a panel that small would be "But where's the actress who plays Cosima--oh yeah." Because I still have a tendency to forget that Tatiana Maslany plays all of them. Tatiana herself is so unlike all the characters that, just, lol. I do hope that the panel gets flooded with attendees and, if they put them in a small room, that it's like "OH SHIT, WE'RE OVERFLOWING INTO THE HALL!"
Things I'd like to know, though:
