I have to say I'm shocked I'm still watching Basilisk... but now I'm interested in seeing how everyone is going to kill everyone else. The background music, though a bit odd, has something about it that works for me, too. Hmm... the character designs bother me though. Ah, you get some, you lose some.
Basilisk ep 1 & 2

Browsing the Net, I found a rather fitting description of Basilisk as a Romeo and Juliet story with ninjas. It seems to have been adapted from a novel and is also in manga form. It's a rather shounen series, as the Iga and the Kouga ninja clans have each chosen 10 of their ninja that must fight each other to the death to determine the next shogun. The fights will probably be very big (from what they've shown us of fights), spectacular, and filled with lots of strange skills. Just looking at the characters you know that they have to be harboring some strange skills, so Naruto-esque in that respect. The story opens with a fight that left me unsure if I'd want to keep watching since it's one of those, Whoa, ninja have crazy powerz. Then again, it's not Naruto-esque in the "Let's fight, not talk" aspect, which is one of the things that caused my interest in Naruto to wane (less dialogue about how you're fighting and just go about fighting for me), and the blatant blood lust in the ninja. It's rather disturbing, really. But, hey, if you're ordered to kill each other, I guess you might as well enjoy it. Of course, the two heirs of the clans are in love. *sigh*
( more thoughts and spoilers )
But why is it called "Basilisk"?
